About Mr. Sheridan
Thank you for visiting my website. It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I am able to introduce myself to you as your child’s 5th grade teacher, Mr. Sheridan. I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing staff here at Princeton Elementary.
Education
I graduated from Oakland University back in December 2010 with a degree in Elementary Education with a focus in Language Arts and Math. After graduating, my dream came true and I landed a 5th Grade teaching position here in Lakeview. I have been teaching in Lakeview for 13 years with this being my 11th year at Princeton teaching the grade I love; 5th grade. Shortly after I began teaching in Lakeview, I went to back to school to earn my master's degree in Curriculum Instruction & Assessment.
Family
I come a very large family. I am the youngest of six kids. My older brother and sister are both teachers in Utica and Anchor Bay respectively. I married my best friend, thirteen years ago and met her when I was student teaching. My wife, Renee, teaches 2nd Grade in Chippewa Valley. We are blessed with two wonderful boys. Our oldest son, Dominic, just turned 9 this past July and our other son, Carmen, is 6 1/2 years old. They both keep us on our toes and we wouldn't want it any other way! I'm thrilled to be part of the Princeton Family. I look forward to continue bringing my education and life experiences to the staff and students here at Princeton.
How and Why I Became A Teacher
I did not get to this point in my life by chance or by accident. I have experienced life changing moments that have helped mold me into the person I am today. I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) at the beginning of my 4th grade year and lost my right leg as a result five years later when I was in 8th Grade. It was a difficult time in my life but in the end it has been a true blessing in disguise.
When I was in the 8th grade, I was inspired by my teacher, Ms. Pryor. Ms. Pryor is one of those teachers I will never forget. She taught her students the importance of integrity as well as acceptance. She was able to transform classroom into a family, a family that included me. I felt accepted and whole. She cared just as much about Cory Sheridan the person as Cory Sheridan the student. She taught us just as much about life skills as she did about academics. This experience showed me the teacher I wanted to be.
Shortly after my amputation, I was introduced to an amazing individual named Andrea Jaeger. She runs her own foundation called Little Star. She invited me out to Aspen, Colorado where she helped me realize there was much more life for me to live and that something special was going to come out of this whole mess. When I turned 18, Andrea brought me back to Aspen to work as a counselor with the kids. After volunteering at several cancer camps, Andrea convinced me that I was in the wrong field of study at the time. She went on to tell me that I would be selling myself short being behind a desk all day crunching numbers, which originally was my plan. It was at that moment I thought about changing my degree from finance to elementary education. Looking back, it has ended up being the best decision I have ever made.
Although many people may say I have had many tragic experiences in my 36 years, I'd say that I have had many positives experiences. It was through meeting Ms. Pryor, Andrea, and the children at Little Star that helped shape my identity. Without these people and experiences I would have missed my true purpose. I feel as if I have been given a second chance at life, which I refuse to take for granted. I use this attitude to create a warm and positive classroom for all of my students. For any obstacle we may face in life, there tends to be a silver lining waiting for us down the road and mine was finding my passion in life, teaching..
Fun/Favorites/Goals
I am a diehard Tigers fan! My favorite team is the Detroit Tigers. I love watching them on TV and going down to Comerica Park. One of my many goals with my family is to travel around the country and see all 30 Major League Baseball Stadiums. So far we have visited 9 MLB Stadiums. During my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and working around the house. My favorite foods are pizza and pasta! During the summer when the weather is right, I enjoy going working outside, swimming, boating and taking road trips around the country!
